About Us
We are a neighbourhood bar in the heart of the thriving Abbeydale Road community (largely because the bars on Abbeydale Road are our favourite places to go out).
“The sun is over the yardarm” is an expression that means it’s time for the first drink of the day.
I (Alfie) first heard the expression when working for a brilliant Chef called Simon. Around 2 o’clock in the afternoon, on Sundays, Simon would ask the bartender if the sun was over the yardarm. This meant he was ready for his ice cold beer to help get him through the last few hours of his incredibly long working week.
When working for Simon and his wife Lucy, the level of dedication they showed to great food, drinks and service inspired me to pursue a career in hospitality and eventually open my own place.
At Over The Yardarm I always aspire to show the same level of dedication to the things that make us a great place to meet your friends. Amazing food, drinks and the sort of service that’s welcoming and friendly without being intrusive. You’re here to spend time with your friends and that’s what’s important.
